porcelain Tooth Veneers
A dental veneer is a thin layer of restorative material placed over a prepared tooth surface. They are used to enhance a tooth's look or to cover a chip, stain, small gap, or crack. Veneers can quickly and easily give your smile a perfectly straight and white appearance. There is no recovery time afterwards.
There are two materials used for veneers: composite and porcelain. A composite veneer is placed in one appointment over the prepared tooth. A porcelain veneer is placed in two appointments, as the veneer is made in a dental laboratory.
There are several advantages to dental veneers. Esthetic enhancements can be easily attained with minimal tooth preparation. Composite veneers are popular because of their repair ease. porcelain veneers are excellent due to their longevity. They will feel as normal and natural as your regular teeth and will last for many years with proper care.
The first step to is talk to your dentist, to make sure that you are a good candidate for veneers. If you are deemed a good candidate, the dentist will take an impression of your mouth. The color and shape of the veneer will be custom crafted by the dental laboratory. Once received from the lab your veneers will be permanently bonded to your tooth.
Home Care for porcelain Veneers
- The number one thing to avoid is excessive alcohol consumption. Alcohol breaks down the veneer bonding, and can cause your veneer to become loose and fall off. Also beware of mouthwashes containing alcohol.
- Floss and brush your teeth gently. Aggressive brushing may cause gum tissue recession. Your porcelain veneers are not susceptible to tooth decay, but the other tooth areas are still susceptible.
- Do not bite or chew on hard objects or chew on pencils or pens, as this may chip your veneers. If you grind your teeth, ask your dentist about a mouth guard. Protect your investment, avoid contact sports!
- Watch what you eat and drink. Excessive sugared foods or drinks may cause premature decay around your veneers. Snacking all day long increases your chances of tooth decay. If you do eat frequently, remember to brush and floss afterwards.
