Frenectomy

A frenectomy is a surgical procedure the frenum is cut. The frenum is a fold of tissue that connects the gums with the lip, cheek, or tongue. If it is too short, it can cause some speaking difficulty or interfere with normal tooth alignment. If you are located in the Lansing area, a simple examination by one of our highly experienced cosmetic dentists can determine whether your frenum is causing enough damage for you to consider its removal.

Speech difficulty

When the frenum beneath the tongue is too short and does not allow the tongue to move freely, it causes a condition named “tongue tied”, a type of speech difficulty. It’s the most common frenum-related problem.

Gap between the two front teeth

If the frenum attached to the lip and gums is too short, it creates excessive tension against the gums, causing a dramatic gap between the teeth. This is the second most common frenum-related problem.
