Dental Bridges FAQs

What are bridges?

Bridges are essentially a false tooth anchored to other crowned teeth in the mouth.

What kinds of bridges are there?

There are three types of bridges. A 'traditional fixed bridge' is a false tooth fused between two crowns. A 'resin-bonded bridge' is used on the front teeth where the false tooth is fused to a metal band that is adhered to the abutment tooth with resin. A 'cantilever bridge' is used when there are only teeth on one side of the false tooth to be implanted and that false tooth is anchored to one or more teeth on that side.

What is the basic process for applying a traditional fixed bridge?

For a traditional fixed bridge, the first step is to cut down the teeth that the bridge will be attached to make room for the crown. Secondly, a mold will be taken of your mouth so the false tooth can be custom-crafted. Lastly the bridge is applied using special dental cement.
