Tooth Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a relatively simple surgical procedure that is aimed at adjusting the position of the gums around the affected teeth. When your tooth cracks, or is decayed enough so that it prevents your gums from having the amount of tooth root needed to tightly attach to and prevent food and bacteria from being trapped, then a crown lengthening may be necessary.

Crown lengthenings may also be done as a cosmetic dentistry procedure to make your natural teeth appear longer and reduce the look of a gummy smile. In addition, if you have broken or chipped teeth, we often recommend this procedure to our patients in the Lansing area to lay the groundwork for porcelain veneers or crowns that will be placed over their natural teeth at a later date.

During the procedure, one of our highly trained cosmetic dentists, Dr. DiStefano or Dr. Nguyen, will numb your gums and make a small incision above the teeth that are affected. Then, he will gently peel back the gums from the teeth and remove several millimeters of gum in order to expose a small part of each tooth that was previously covered.  When he is sure that the gums are tightly covering the visible tops of each tooth again, he will suture the incisions and the surgery is complete.

The recovery time will take approximately six weeks, after which porcelain veneers, dental crowns or other cosmetic treatments can be applied.
