Composite Resin Tooth Fillings
When you have a cavity or a decayed section in one of your teeth, it is important to remove the diseased material as soon as possible and insert a filling into the hole that has been created. If this doesn't happen, the tooth will continue to decay and become unstable, possibly even falling out.
Over the years there have been many advances made with regards to the kind of fillings available. Until fairly recently, the only options were bonded composite, porcelain, and gold. Now we have the ability to use composite resin fillings instead, which are made of a plastic dental resin. These have many advantages over metal fillings because they can be matched to the exact color of your natural teeth. They are stronger than metal fillings; they generally last longer. For all of these reasons, they are the fillings of choice for our patients in the Lansing area.
The procedure for composite resin fillings is fairly simple and shouldn't cause very much pain if a local anesthetic is used to numb the area. The first step is for one of our expert cosmetic dentists, Dr. DiStefano or Dr. Nguyen, to remove any decayed material with a drill. Next, a special dental material is applied to your tooth to help open the pores and roughen the surface so the resin can adhere easily. Then, the composite resin will be applied in thin layers that are dried after each application until the cavity has been completely filled in.
Dental insurance generally covers a percentage of the costs associated with new composite fillings, or using composite fillings to fix older, cracked fillings. Our staff will help you determine what your insurance will cover and help you fill out the necessary forms to file a claim.
