Bone Grafting

Dental bone grafting is a process of replacing or augmenting the bone that surrounds and supports the teeth.  Advanced periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss and bone loss advancing the disease still further. In addition, when a tooth is lost, jawbone loss makes it difficult to place implants for a replacement tooth.

Why is a bone graft needed?

A bone graft is required when bone has been lost or destroyed, whether by periodontal disease, poor fitting dentures, or extreme trauma.

What are the types of bone graft?

  • Autogeneous – bone taken from one part of the patient’s body and placed in a different part. An autogeneous bone graft is the best type, yielding the most predictable results. It is the “gold standard” because autogeneous bone is alive with active cells, providing the best bone growth.
  • Allograft – synthetic or donor bone, a good choice because ample amounts of it are available.
  • Xenograft – cow bone, also a good choice for the same reason.
